How summer-program financial aid works

Separate tuition aid from travel, housing, meals, deposits, and other costs before deciding whether a program is affordable.

01

Find every cost

  1. List the program fee, application fee, deposit, housing, meals, travel, local transportation, materials, and required technology.
  2. Treat missing information as unknown, not $0.
  3. Check whether a refundable deposit still has to be paid before aid arrives.
02

Understand the aid claim

  1. Confirm whether aid is need-based, merit-based, first-come, or guaranteed for eligible students.
  2. Ask whether aid covers only tuition or can also cover travel, housing, and meals.
  3. Record the aid deadline separately from the program application deadline.
03

Build a path to attendance

  1. Apply for fee waivers and program aid before seeking outside funding.
  2. Ask the program what documentation is required and whether an aid appeal is possible.
  3. Do not pay a nonrefundable fee until you understand what remains uncovered.
