Ask for a recommendation

Give a teacher or mentor enough time and context to write a useful, specific recommendation.

01

Choose the right person

  1. Ask someone who knows your work, growth, reliability, or character, not only the person with the most impressive title.
  2. Check whether the application requires a teacher from a specific subject.
  3. Ask at least three to four weeks before the deadline whenever possible.
02

Make the request

  1. Ask whether they feel comfortable writing a strong recommendation.
  2. Share the program, deadline, submission instructions, and why you are applying.
  3. Provide your resume plus a short list of relevant work or moments they may remember.
03

Follow through

  1. Send a reminder one week before the deadline if the portal still shows it as missing.
  2. Thank them after submission and update them on the result.
  3. Do not write the letter for them unless they explicitly request a factual draft under their own policy.
