Free course or free certificate? Check the difference

Separate free learning access from certificate fees, paid exams, trials, and required software.

01

Check access

  1. Use the provider’s course page to confirm the lessons you can access for free, age restrictions, and any time limit.
  2. Check whether assignments and feedback are included, and whether a payment card or subscription is required.
  3. Avoid treating a temporary free trial as a free course.
02

Check the credential

  1. Record certificate and exam prices separately from course access.
  2. Distinguish a completion certificate from academic credit or a professional certification.
  3. Confirm required materials, software, or equipment before enrolling. Ask your school if you want the course recognized for credit.
